Ok Marlins fans, your team is coming off a 5 out of 6 winning streak, the dynamic offense that everyone has been waiting for is finally showing signs of life, and your team which was sitting in the N.L. East basement less than a week ago is now in 2nd place…..Naturally it’s the perfect time for some friction in the clubhouse brought on by your star franchise player.
Last night in Florida, Hanley Ramirez was benched in the 2nd inning following a questionable effort on a slow looper by Tony Abreu over shortstop that created a circus of chaos. After the ball fell in between Ramirez and the left fielder, Ramirez accidentally kicked the ball down into the left field corner and merely jogged after the ball allowing 2 runs to score and the runner to reach 3rd base.
Following the inning, it can be seen in the dugout that manager Fredi Gonzalez was anything but pleased at the effort and sent the All-Star shortstop packing for the duration of the game. Following the game, a war of words were exchanged between Ramirez who claims that was the fastest he could run after the ball following being hit on the foot after a foul ball in the 1st inning. He later lashed out saying that Gonzalez never played and doesn’t know what the players go through.
Gonzalez stuck to his guns regardless of it being his superstar player, “We expect an effort from 25 guys on this team. When that doesn’t happen, we’ve got to do something,” Gonzalez said on Monday night.
Ramirez was not suspended by Gonzalez but sat out the remainder of Monday nights game and was not in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s matinee with the Diamondbacks.
It remains to be seen how this will effect the club. If Ramirez feels other teammates have dogged it on ground balls and the team doesn’t believe in their so called leaders effort, could make for a very long remaining 4 months to the season……Stay Tuned
