Apollo Creed\'s Advice
Thank you Apollo Creed for your words and wisdom. Celtics need to take Apollo’s advice; they need to have the “Eye of the Tiger” for the remainder of the series. Rocky listened to Apollo and he knocked out Mr. T. If it worked for Rocky, then it will work for the Celtics.
Eye of the Tiger.
Boston Celtics are sitting in a great position, winning two road games in Orlando and they now have a commanding 2-0 lead over the Magic with the next two games in Boston. Now is not the time to relax though for this Celtic team – it’s a time to be fierce. Game 3 is an important game for both teams. Boston will try to make it 3-0 Saturday night and get one game closer to where they want to be. Orlando will give it their all Saturday night as they desperately need a win to get back in the series.
The Bruins made history of the worst kind last week, becoming only the 4th team to lose a 7 game series after being up 3-0. It’s a series the other team playing at the Garden can learn from. If a team has a chance to put pressure on the opponent and end the series, go for the kill right away because if the team doesn’t…just ask the Flyers.
The Celtics have the most important commodity for any team vying for a championship – veterans. Young, athletic teams can get into the playoffs and contend for a couple of playoff rounds, maybe even make it to the Finals, but veteran teams will always persevere and win championships. Look at the past NBA champions, Lakers, Celtics, and the Spurs all had veteran players. Veteran players know what it takes to win it all. They know the amount of focus required to succeed.
The current Celtics’ starters are the same group of guys that won banner 17 only two years ago. KG, Pierce, Allen, Perk, Rondo have been on the big stage before and more importantly, have been on the big stage playing right next to each other. Against the Magic for the first two games, the starters looked intensely focused and confident. Men on a Mission.
After beating the Cavs, the Celtics went right back to work, a sign of a veteran team. A younger team would have celebrated after knocking off the best player and team in the NBA. After the Cleveland series, a younger team would not have won two games on the road in Orlando; more likely, a younger team would be down two games instead.
I’m sure the team was thrilled to be coming back home to Boston with a 2-0 lead, but the thrill is officially gone as today the team looks ahead to game 3. As Doc said after game 5 in the Cleveland series, the Celtics haven’t done anything yet. They need to win 4 games.
Unfortunately, we all have to wait till Saturday for game 3. The long layover in between games 2 and 3 should work in the Celtics favor. It will give a chance for the older players to heal up and give Doc and the coaching staff more time to figure out how to contain Dwight Howard and stop the Magic shooters.
The layover also means it will give the Magic more time to shake off the first two games. They made late runs in both games giving themselves a chance to win. This tells me that the Magic haven’t played a complete game yet and hopefully they never have the chance to.
Celtics can not let up in this series. They need to ask themselves, “What would Rocky do?”
Eye of the Tiger. Cue the Rocky music.
