Subway Series ’10: Is Manuel’s Job Doomed?

Its the 7 train against the 4, B, and D trains.  The Yankees have three times as many subway lines servicing their stadium compared to the Mets.  The Pinstripes also have 13.5 times as many championships, with their 27-2 “edge” over the Amazins in World Series trophies.

This year’s Metro Card Matchup looks like it may be just as lopsided as this lousy history. The Mets (last nights 10-7 victory vs the pesky Nats notwithstanding) have been pretty listless this year.  David Wright has been decidedly non-clutch.  Probably no one could have had a bigger impact than David if he had only come through in big spots, although Jason Bay (still one homer vs. 36 last year!) is right behind him.

Not only have the key hitters for the Amazins been decidedly icy, but the Mets overall style and approach has been so station-to-station, so cautious, so boring, so lacking in any pizazz. Bunting a runner to third?  So David Wright can strike out?  Not workin’ for me.

So it begs the question, if the Mets are so frustratingly weak-willed and ill-prepared to win games, isn’t it the manager’s responsibility to get the team fired up, to mix things up, to make the guys a little uncomfortable?  Is Jerry doing enough?  If, lets say, the Yankees sweep the Mets this series (heaven forbid), would Manuel be gone-zo?

Basically there are two times during the season when you can fire a manager.  When there is still a chance to turn things around, or after (and because) its too late to do anything about a non-playoff year.  You could definitely argue that the sand is running out of the “there’s still time” side of the equation.

Then again, what if somehow the stars aligned and the Mets had the audacity to drop a big broom down on the Bombers!  Would that then mean that the ship is pointed in the right direction? Would Manuel (who has is currently being stalked by management on a road trip)  buy himself some time?

Not to be rhetorical, but I can’t answer these questions right now!  A lot depends on how the Mets look in this series…
