Injuries, schedule provide chances

After Saturday’s 5-4 extra-inning win over the Texas Rangers, the Chicago Cubs sit in third place in the division, trailing the Cincinnati Reds by 5 1/2 games and the St. Louis Cardinals by 5 games.
However, both the Reds and Cardinals suffered injuries that could open the door for the Cubs. Reds’ Johnny Cueto, who improved to 4-1 on the season by beating the Cleveland Indians, was removed after six innings due to blisters. While it’s yet uncertain if Cueto will miss any time, the Cardinals’ rotation has suffered significant blows: Brad Penny was already sent to the disabled list and righty Kyle Lohse might be next.
Meanwhile, Carlos Silva is set to take the mound on Sunday in the rubber game of the series against the Rangers. The Cubs, who are 7-1 in Silva’s starts this season, will hope to build momentum coming out of Arlington, because the stretch of games that follow will be very important. After an off-day and a three-game series with the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers, the next twelve are scheduled to be against divisional opponents. That stretch of games will lead into a month of June where currently none of the opponents are above .500.
It seems like if the Cubs could get hot, this would be a perfect time to start making up some ground.
