Suns Season Finished

After suffering a heart-breaking loss in game 5 the Suns needed to come out strong in game 6, and there was no reason to think that they would not. After all, the home team had won each game through the first five games of the series.  In game 5 they were down by as much as fifteen points in the second half and were still able to fight back and  tie the game going into the last possession.  I think the overriding consensus was that Phoenix would win game 6 and force a game 7 in L.A.

Obviously that didn’t happen.  In fact, after L.A. started pulling away in the second quarter it looked like it was going to be a run-away.  The Lakers had a twelve point lead at halftime and were up seventeen heading into the fourth quarter.  The Suns clawed back, with Steve Nash and three other starters on the bench.  Nash re-entered the game and the Suns pulled to within three points.  The Lakers held them off and won the game 111-103, and won the series four games to two.

The biggest question for the Suns as they enter the off-season has to do with Amare Stodemire.  He is entering the last year of his contract, but has an opt-out option that he could use to become a free agent.  After the game he said he is going to take a few days off, but that right now he thinks he is “50-50″ to return to the Suns.

So what should Suns fans think of this season?  They are probably disappointed because the Suns once again aren’t going to compete for an NBA title.  Even I, a Spurs fan, am starting to feel bad for Steve Nash.   But truthfully this year’s Suns probably overachieved a little by just making the Western Conference finals.

So now on to the free agency circus that will define the NBA summer of 2010.
