Clip-clop, clip-clop in Tampa

That’s the sound of footsteps, folks!

Despite leading the majors with a 34-18 record, the rest of the AL BEast is creeping up behind the Rays.

After the Rays dropped a heartbreaker to the Jays yesterday, the Yankees moved to within 2.5 games of first place, with the Jays just one game behind them. Not to be counted out just yet, the Red Sox sit five games back. Baltimore is trying to set records for futility.

So what happened to the Rays? They got swept by Boston in a three-game set last week, for starters. After a split four-game series with the White Sox, it’s official that their blistering pace has cooled a bit. This by no means indicates that they are crumbling, just that they are coming back down to Earth.

The Rays pitching staff continues to lead the league with a 3.18 ERA. Jeff Niemann (2.37) and David Price (2.57)  rank first and fourth in the league in ERA and James Shields is third in strikeouts with 74.

At the plate Tampa Bay remains ho-hum, with a .256 team batting average that puts it seventh. The Rays’ run production is good enough for fourth best.

So what about the competition? The Yankees lead the league offensively batting .286, while Toronto is 12th and Boston fifth. The Bombers 289 runs scored are 23 more than the Rays.

On the mound, the Yankees rank fifth, Toronto sixth and Boston ninth.

It’s not time to panic in Tampa just yet, but every win will count even more going ahead. Welcome to June!
