Guess what? The Mariners still can’t hit.
It would be nice to write a new blog and actually have something new to say but really the Mariners have yet to do anything different this entire season. The script is pretty much as follows…
Very good starting pitching. check
Bullpen is adequate. check
Ichiro and Gutierrez hitting around .300 or .340 in Ichiro’s case. check
The rest of the team batting around the Mendoza line. check
The team hitting fewer home runs than most high school teams. check
The Mariners 8 games back in the division. check
Seattle is now sitting 19-31 after 50 games this season. And things are about to get uglier. After dropping their first game of the four game set with the Twins, Seattle plays three against the Angels and four against the Rangers. After that inter league play really gets going and the Mariners are not getting any favors there either. The Padres, Cubs, Cardinals, Reds, and Brewers are on the dance card for Seattle. going .500 in the next three to four weeks will be a tough task.
If Seattle wishes to turn their season around now is the time. It will take winning 14 of the next 20 to give them any hope of getting back in the divisional race. However if the M’s can’t find a way to generate offense then they will be 15+ games out by the end of the month.
Have a good one!
