Junior Hangs Them Up

Yesterday Ken Griffey Jr. announced that he was retiring from the game of baseball. While it is too bad that his recent struggles really kept junior from going out the way he wanted he still goes out leaving an incredible legacy in the sport, and I don’t think it would be unfair to say he is one of the top 5 Center Fielders in the history of baseball.

I consider myself very lucky to have gotten to see him play as a young man here in Calgary when the Mariners would pop in to play their AAA affiliate Calgary Cannons. It was apparent even then you were watching a special player with one of the purest swings I’ve ever seen.

What we know is Ken Griffey Jr. is a first ballot hall of famer. Hitting 630 home runs in his career, and winning the AL MVP in 1997. To me the biggest success of his career and as a person was the fact that he was never involved in the steroid or HGH scandals of the past and put up these incredible power numbers. Couple that with his amazing play in the outfield truly showed how dynamic of a player he was at all facets of the game.

Thank You Ken Griffey Jr. and we all look forward to seeing you in Cooperstown!

Have a good one!
