Fish hoping Stanton can help team swim back upstream

The Florida Marlins announced after Sunday’s game that the teams most promising prospect Mike Santon would be called up and heading to Philly. The Marlins will begin a 3 game series with their divisiion rival Phillies and management is hoping Stanton can inject a much needed spark to to the faltering and under-acheiving club.

His name might remind you of the former lefty reliever that had a solid career as a left handed specialist with the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and New York Mets for so many years in the 90′s but the similarities end there. The 20 year old Mike Stanton is the Marlins most tauted prospect since Miguel Cabrera in 2003. Ironcially Cabrera too was called up in June and just 20 years of age as well.

Stanton had been tearing it up in the minors for Double A Jacksonville. The 6’5, 235 pound phenom launched 21 homers, drove home 52 RBI’s and batted .311 in 52 games with the Suns. He employs a very long  swing and gets a lot of lift and elevation on the ball which should explain some of his mammoth homers in the minors. Most likely Stanton will get most of his playing time in RF.

The call up of Stanton comes on the heels of  the series sweep by the Mets and specifically Sunday’s 7-6 meltdown in which the Marlins had a 5-0 lead. The Marlins have dropped their last 6 of 10 games and have dipped below the .500 mark again at 28-30, good for 4th place in the N.L.East. To make room on the roster for Stanton, veteran utility man Mike Lamb was designated for assignment.

In addition to the announcement of Mike Stanton’s call up on Sunday, the Marlins also recalled INF Emilio Bonifacio and right handed pitcher Rick VandenHurk frpom Triple A New Orleans. OF Brett Carroll and RHP Tim Wood were optioned to New Orleans to make room.
