After the disappointment of missing the playoffs Flames fans that were expecting heads to roll and massive changes were sure in for a shock. The only change that will be made to the Calgary Flames management will be the addition of one or two Assistant GM’s. I would suspect that current Calgary Hitmen General Manager Kelly Kisio will be added in that roll, but beyond that I don’t believe anything is certain.
The best news the Flames have had this off season is that the salary cap will likey go up by about two million dollars which gives Darryl Sutter some wiggle room, however getting rid of a couple of high price low talent contracts will be his #1 priority leading up to the draft.
Speaking of the draft as we all know the Flames do not have a pick until the third round, and I suspect they are inquiring about getting a few more picks in at least the second round. But I am not sure if the Flames do have the pieces to trade to get that high of a pick.
I would assume that Cory Sarich, Steve Staios, Ales Kotalik, and Daymond Langkow are all being offered right now. There is also rumors involving the Washington Capitals that would send Alexander Semin to Calgary for Robyn Regher or Miikka Kiprusoff. I’ll tell you right now that I find it EXTREMELY unlikely that Kiprusoff would be moved in any scenario. I also don’t believe that Regher would be moved either.
If I had to make a guess I would suggest that the Flames will try and move 3 of the four contracts I mentioned before for draft picks, and use that money in free agency. Of course there will be talk of a Spezza deal to Calgary at some point, however I again find it unlikely that the Flames have the pieces in place to make that sort of deal either.
Unfortunately for Flames fans dying for change you are going to have to wait until the draft to find out if Sutter can pull a rabbit out of his hat. At least once the draft is done they will be a far clearer picture as to what the rest of the off season will hold for the Flames.
And to our friends up north in Edmonton I have a suggestion. Trade down with Boston and take Seguin! I truly believe this kid will be the franchise player at center that teams dream about.
Have a good one!
