As the NHL’s constant stream of increasingly insignificant “What if” commercials demonstrates, all NHL seasons are made up of moments, some big, some small. These moments are a collection of flashbulb memories that your brain will file under “2009-2010 Blackhawks” for future access.
For some, that season began only a few weeks ago as your friends and family hopped on the bandwagon, not wanting to miss the party. For some, this season began all the way back when Dylan Olson was drafted. Some watched the preseason contests in Zurich online, and some haven’t seen a game that wasn’t on NBC. It doesn’t really matter.
Collect these moments and cherish them. One day, people will ask you to reminisce about this amazing run, and you’ll retell these moments with a glowing smile and a glint in your eye.
Here are my moments of 2009-2010, some good, some not. Feel free to add yours in the comments.
-The Zurich Lions celebrating beating the Ice Hogs and claiming they were the best in the world.
-Brent Seabrook’s overtime wrister beating Mikka Kiprusoff to complete a comeback win in OT after being down 5-0 after 10 minutes.
-Jonathan Toews undresses Dan Hamuis and Dan Ellis en route to yet another amazing highlight goal.
-Andrew Ladd pots the final goal in a 9 round shootout against Colorado.
-Troy Brouwer comes to the aid of Patrick Kane and pounds Anton Stralman, and then scores the Shootout winner after missing the final 10 minutes of the game.
-Patrick Sharp scores the Hawks’ third short-handed goal of the game and stuns the Shark Tank crowd.
-Captain Serious learns to keep his head up after getting blown up by Willie Mitchell at center ice.
-The Blackhawks cement their first division title in nearly two decades, and don’t celebrate at all.
-Brian Campbell gets shoved over behind the net by Alex Ovechkin and goes down in a heap with a broken collar bone and broken ribs.
-22,000+ shouting “Detroit Sucks!” at the top of their lungs as the Hawks shut out the Wings for a second consecutive time, and the NBC cover-up by saying they were saying “We want the cup.”
-Brad Stuart destroys the Hawks’ dream of a #1 seed with an OT goal on the last day of the season.
-Patrick Kane scores a short-handed empty net goal with 14 seconds left to force overtime. Four minutes later, Hossa comes out of the box to score the winner.
-Dustin Byfuglien scores his second goal en route to a hat trick and circles the GM (Canada Hockey?) Place glass, “saluting” the fans who booed him all night.
-Antti Niemi dives to his left and sweeps the puck off the goal line and out of the net, robbing Ryane Clowe.
-A frustrated Joe Thornton takes a hack at Dave Bolland’s wrist on the faceoff.
-Duncan Keith takes a puck in the face, loses a truckload of teeth, and finishes the game.
-Michael Leighton gets pulled a second time in the Stanley Cup Finals.
-The three sleepless nights building up to Game 6.
Tonight is the chance to add one more of those. Whether it’s heartbreak or glory, this night will be emblazoned in your mind forever (possibly in reverse, with a “What if” line attached.) When the cup is in the building, you can taste those moments brewing.
Savor this, Hawks fans. You may never get another chance.
