Jorge Posada returned to the Yankee lineup after a month on the DL with a foot injury and hit grand slams on back to back days (from both sides of the plate) as the Bombers swept Houston and moved into a tie for first in the AL East with Tampa.
Having Posada back in the lineup and behind the plate is just what the Yankees need heading into the All-Star Break. The seasoned catcher knows how to handle his batterymates better than anyone, and his bat certainly helps.
A tie with the Rays puts New York in perfect position as the second half approaches. While Tampa’s pitching has been stellar, its offense has struggled, while being able to eke out enough runs to win. The Yankees bats are on fire, and with Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes well on their way to 10 wins, the starters are doing just fine.
Middle relief for the Yankees can be shaky, and although he has blown a couple saves, Mariano Rivera is still rock solid. As the summer heats up, the Yankees are getting stronger.
