Stamps Have Canadian Questions

Just a couple weeks away from the start on the 2010 season for the Calgary Stampeders who are looking to improve upon last years 10-7-1 record and a loss in the West Final against the Saskatchewan Roughriders have some big questions on offense and definitely in the kicking game which relates to Canadian Content.

For the uninitiated in the Canadian game. The CFL has a roster limit of 42 active players of which 20 must be Canadian born. And moving forward the teams require 7 of those Canadian players to be starters. Most teams generally have more than 7 starting but those are the limits.

Which brings us to the Stampeders who have always had the luxury of a Canadian dominated OL and a kicker and punter who were Canadian. Starting at kicker Sandro Deangelis who is the best kicker in the CFL left in the off season as a free agent to be closer to his home and is now kicking for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. The Stamps addressed this by drafting a Canadian kicker Rob Maver in the 1st round of the CFL draft. Maver has looked good in training camp but he will have to prove he can be money when the games count like Sandro was.

The Offensive line was decimated in the off season with Dimitri Tsoumpas heading to the Miami Dolphins of the NFL, along with the retirements of Jeff Pilon and Jesse Newman there are some big shoes to fill in regards to protecting QB Henry Burris.

Injuries to Ryan Thelwell and the retirement of Brett Ralph have hurt the content ration as well for the Stampeders in the WR core but should be less of an issue filling in spots as WR is traditionally a position where the Stampeders have always been able to find Canadian talent.

If the Canadian Content doesn’t hurt the Stamps too much they should be alright as the Offense looks to be just as high powered as in years past. the Defense may be improved. And as long as the kicking game doesn’t fall apart Calgary should be competitive in 2010.

We’ll take a closer look at the Offense and Defense before the season kicks off and of course predictions for what will happen in the league!

Have a good one!
