That is the million dollar question in Flames land. I would suggest most Flames fans expect Darryl Sutter to go ‘cowboy’ at the draft and try to make something big happen. A number of writers have suggested that Darryl’s job could be on the line if the Flames don’t make a sharp and sudden return to the playoffs and competing for the division title.
There have been names swirling that the Flames want to get in on, and I’m going to go through a few of the names and tell you why I think Darryl Sutter may go off the board on what the major media thinks he may do. So lets start with the big names making the rounds.
Jason Spezza – Spezza is an easy guy to pinpoint for Flames fans. It is no secret that Spezza wants out of Ottawa though both sides are playing it far more professionally than the Heatley situation. The problem here is yes Jason may be a bit overpaid but that shouldn’t deter a team like the Flames. It is what the Flames can give back that will cause the issue. Bryan Murray will not make a trade with a questionable return again for one of his franchise players. So an offer of Langkow, Sarich, and Nemisz just isn’t going to cut it.
Nathan Horton – The Flames trading for a player with questionable heart that puts up big numbers in Florida. Sound familiar? I just don’t think Sutter is going to this well again. If it didn’t work he would be fired immediately. The only way this trade happens is if the asking price for Horton is extremely low and it probably wont be.
Trade for the #2 pick – Personally I would take a serious look at making this happen. But I don’t think Sutter’s plans are to take a big step back that getting the #2 pick would cause to happen. To be blunt this isn’t happening. Though I fully suspect Boston will trade the pick.
Trade for a 1st rounder – I would only trade into the 1st round if I could get into the top half. I suspect the price tag for that will be extremely high for rolling the dice on a 1st rounder that may never pan out. i also suspect that the reason Calgary signed Bryan Cameron, and Chris Breen as overage Junior UFA’s. If the price tag is too high they can say they signed a tank of a defenseman, and the OHL’s leading scorer to fill the gap of not having a pick before the 3rd round.
So what will happen? My best guess is there will be a couple of salary dump trades. But do not be surprised if Sutter pulls a rabbit out of his hat and tries to make a big splash at or just before the draft. He may again try to trade for the rights of an upcoming UFA that he wants to take a run at.
The only thing that would truly surprise me is if the Flames did nothing.
Have a good one!
