TSN and ESPN have reported that a possible deal between the Chicago BlackHawks and Atlanta Thrashers may have been made. The key word is “may”. While there is no confirmation on the proposed deal it is a trade that makes complete sense for the Blackhawks as they need to “give away” players to free up cap space for this up coming season.
The proposed deal in question is supposedly playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien along with cagey veteran Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, and highly touted prospect Akim Aliu to the Thrashers for the 24th and 54th picks in this years upcoming draft, Marty Reasoner and prospect Jeremy Morin and Joey Crabb.
If the deal does go through it will roughly clear about 5.3 million off the Cap next season so the first step of the Hawks giveaways has begun successfully albeit hard to handle.
Marty Reasoner would bring a decent 4th line centerman at a 1.1 million cap hit while Morin was selected 45th overall by Atlanta in 2009. The keys of the deal here are the draft picks, while 24th is not high enough to select a guy like Jack Campbell it definitely gives the Hawks some more leverage to deal the 24th pick and perhaps a player to move up in the draft.
I say Jack Campbell because I believe the Hawks need to address their goaltending depth for the future, I am fine with Niemi/Crawford next year as we all should be but after those 2 goaltenders the Hawks depth in the minors had diminished somewhat.
I do have one source believe it or not and he has forwarded me a notification that the Bruins are interested in Brian Campbell. Could the Hawks ship Campbell and perhaps 2 first round picks this year for the Bruins number 2 overall pick and perhaps a player? It’s doubtful but wouldn’t it be nice if Stan Bowman pulled off something like that to land Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall.
If the deal goes through and is finalized I will update it here so stay tuned for todays proposed deal and many more to come.
UPDATE: AS PER Bob Mackenzie of TSN: “it is my understanding Chi-Atl trade hold up is indeed because Atl would have 51 contracts with trade. Atl has to move a contract first.”
UPDATE: AS PER Chris Kuc: “Dustin Byfuglien’s agent says he nor Byfuglien have heard from Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman or Thrashers GM Rick Dudley about the trade.”
UPDATE: Congrats to Duncan Keith on winning the Norris Trophy this year, Stanley cup, Olympic gold medal and now the Norris. Well deserved and what a year!
UPDATE: Thanks to my buddy David Ace giving me the heads up. As per Nick Kypreos: “Atlanta completes 2 deals with SJ to clear some room for the Byfuglien deal. Confirmed.”
UPDATE: As per Craig Custance ” Chicago is also getting Joey Crabb from ATL in the Dustin Byfuglien deal.”
Crabb is a 6’1 191lb winger and has spent most of his time in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves (Atlanta’s farm team) he seems to have some offensive punch to him averaging around a point per game in the AHL while spending 29 games with Atlanta and accomplishing 9 pts. With the Blackhawks roster getting thinner by all of the contract dumping going on we may see Crabb get a shot with the big club at some point during next season.
Also talking to my Capitals Correspondent Sahota on any Washington news.
POSSIBLE TRADE UPDATE: Nothing official yet but it seems Chicago is not done dealing as there is a potential deal of Colin Fraser for a 6th round draft from the Edmonton Oilers.
“We’ll explore other ways for changes … we don’t necessarily have to do anything else,” Bowman said.
This proves yet again that we on the outside world honestly have no clue what the REAL salary cap issue is. We can speculate via Capgeek.com and other sites etc. But it is purely speculation and educated guesses.
Thanks as always for reading,
