The ProSportsBlogging team is down in LA for the 2010 NHL draft, and amidst the speculation of Taylor vs Tyler and the abundance of trade rumors, the Montreal Canadiens hold the 27th overall pick in the first round. The 2010 draft class is a deep group with many high end forwards, and a number of quality defensemen; so Montreal should end up with a good player, provided they don’t overestimate the capabilities of the player they select and he end up becoming a bust. There is no reason to expect that to happen; considering the flourishing careers of recent first round studs selected by Trevor Timmins such as Andrei Kosttisyn, Kyle Chipchura and David Fischer. And you thought the Habs would be better off with Zach Parise, Mike Green and Claude Giroux! Sarcasm and bitterness aside; here’s a look at what Montreal might be doing.
Defense! There was a time when it appeared as if Montreal would be stacked on the blueline for years to come. All of a sudden, in a few short years, Andrei Markov has had a flurry of injuries, Yannick Weber regressed, Matt Carle can’t stay healthy, Ryan McDonagh was traded, Pavel Valentenko defected to Russia, Alexei Yemelin won’t come over from Russia, and David Fischer has been labeled as a bust. The only silver lining is the emergence of PK Subban. That leaves Montreal with very little depth on the backend, something I hope they address in the draft.
Dylan McIlrath – a big, physical D-man who can deliver big hits and drop the gloves too, while providing a steady presence defensively. He has soared up the charts and might go in the 15-20 range. The Habs would be lucky to land him at #27.
Jarred Tinordi – a good 2-way defenseman with impressive size. Not an elite level player but a very safe defender who can develop into a good #2 or a very good #3.
Justin Faulk – another D from the US Development program. He’s got good offensive instincts and has a booming shot from the point.
Alexander Petrovic – a guy who has flown under the radar because of the surplus of so many good fowrards. Another big body presence (notice a trend) who can evolve into a solid shutdown defenseman.
ProSportsBlogging’s mock draft had Montreal land Jarred Tinordi. There was a report that Montreal will be looking to address their size down the middle, but with the acquisiton of Lars Eller, I would hope that they choose to select a defenseman.
