Bertuzzi Signs, Datsyuk Wins Selke

Earlier this week, Todd Bertuzzi signed a two year deal with the Red Wings, reportedly for $2.25 million in the first year, and $1.625 million in the second year. Bertuzzi adds a very much needed solid physical presence for Detroit, with a bit of a scoring touch.
A lot of debate has surrounded Bertuzzi ever since the Steve Moore incident. Bertuzzi has apologized numerous times about the incident and has paid millions for it. There is also a supposed jinx that follows Bertuzzi, but as we’ve seen this year with Marian Hossa, jinxes can be broken.
Last night at the NHL awards, the Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk came home with some much deserved hardware. He won the Selke Trophy for the league’s top defensive forward for the third straight year. Since 1994, the Selke Trophy has been won by a Red Wings player seven times, Sergei Fedorov winning it twice, Datsyuk three times, Steve Yzerman once, and Kris Draper once. Bob Gainey is the only player to win it more times than Datsyuk, having won it four times consecutively, from 1977-1981.
Jimmy Howard was also up for an award, the Calder Trophy as the leagues top rookie. Howard finished the voting in second, Buffalo Sabres Defenceman Tyler Myers won the trophy very convincingly. While Howard performed very well, Myers, racked up 48 points as a rookie defenseman and led his team in ice time with just short of 24 minutes per game.
