Marlins skipper gets the hook

In a move that many around Marlins camp considered inevitable if the team didn’t change its inconsistent ways, on Wednesday the Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez was sent packing. Sporting a 34-36, 4th place record in the quickly accelerating NL East, Gonzalez was relieved of his duties along with bench coach Carlos Tosca and batting coach Jim Presley.

Gonzalez, the first time manager, took over for Joe Girardi after the 2006 season and turned the Marlins back into a competitive team with a diminishing payroll. Gonzalez record over the 4 years was 276-279 including Manager of the Year crown in 2008.

The clubs Triple A manager, Edwin Rodriguez was named interim manager until the team can find a permanent replacement. Sources have indicated ESPN’s Baseball Tonight and former New York Mets/Texas Rangers manager Bobby Valentine at the top of the Marlins wish list. Taking command of ships like the Orioles and Indians were not enticing offers enough to lure Valentine away from the desk but an up and coming team like the Marlins with a solid young pitching staff and a potent offense that is simply underachieving might pose more of an opportunity.

I’m never one that’s big on the firing of managers or coaches but can someone tell me why it is becoming more and more popular in professional sports to fire a coach after a win? For some reason I feel it just doesn’t sit as well as it would after another gut-wrenching defeat. Was this a ploy by star player Hanley Ramirez to show his pull with upper management or simply a change in direction to compete with the rest of the division that seems to be on a roll (Except for the Nationals of course)

Stay tuned Edwin Rodriquez…..the fun has just begun.
