Oilers shore up centre, take Pitllick from Minnesota State

Good morning from Los Angeles!

Still buzzing from yesterday’s historic first overall selection of Taylor Hall, the Edmonton Oilers kicked off Day 2 of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by selecting Tyler Pitlick, a centre from Minnesota State University.

Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini selected Pitlick to fill a glaring hole in the organization at centre. Pitlick was ranked 18th overall by Central Scouting.

The Oilers’ next move, acquiring Slovakian monster D-man, Martin Marincin, through a trade for Carolina’s 46th, was brilliant. Compared to fellow countryman, Zdeno Chara, the teen blueliner is already pushing 6”, 5’! Plenty of upside with this kid, who still needs a few years of seasoning. To acquire Carolina’s 46th overall, the Oilers parted ways with B.C. prospect Riley Nash. Edmonton soured on Nash a bit this year, after the Cornell University product cooled on the idea of leaving the eastern U.S. school to join the Oilers’ farm club.

The organization felt that Nash, who led Cornell in scoring last season, was falling behind other prospects in his draft class, by playing a 30-game schedule in a softer league.

Edmonton then selected Curtis Hamilton from the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades with the 48th overall selection. The 6”, 2’, 200-pound forward provides Edmonton with some depth and size at the centre position, though he spent much of this past season rehabbing from a broken collar bone injury.

The following is a list of the Oilers’ remaining picks:

Third Round
Ryan Martindale, C, Ottawa 67s

Fourth Round
Jeremy Blain, D, Bathurst

Fifth Round
Tyler Bunz, G, Medicine Hat

Sixth Round
Brandon Davidson, D, Regina Pats
Drew Czerwonka, forward (enforcer), Kootenay

Seventh Round
Kristians Pelss, Forward, Latvia
Kellen Jones, Forward, Vernon, BCJHL

To answer a reader’s earlier query, Pat Quinn was not at the Oilers’ draft table.

Leaving the draft now. Hope you enjoyed our 2010 NHL Draft coverage Oil fans. Very exciting couple of days here in L.A.

In the meantime Oil fans, keep you chins up and your sticks down.
