Fans of the NBA are calling the summer of 2010, the summer of Lebron. With other notable free agents available this summer like Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, Hawks fans throughout the world are calling it the summer of Joe. Signing the face of the franchise since the 2005-2006 Joe Johnson has to be the Hawks number one priority for the offseason now that they have hired Larry Drew as their head coach.
It’s no secret that the East is not the beast in the NBA in the recent years, and I am sure Joe knows that as well. Chicago got in the playoffs as the eighth seed in the east with 41 wins, which is a .500 record. In the west, Oklahoma City Thunder was the eighth seed in the west and they had 50 wins. With the Hawks the third best team in the east this year, they would be a middle tier team in the western playoffs this season.
If you watched the Hawks at all this season you will know they have to replace Marvin Williams and acquire a legit center. The free agent big men this summer is quite impressive as well. With players such as Amar’e Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer, Brendon Haywood, Jermanie O’Neal, and Marcus Camby, to name a few signing one of these impact centers has to rank up there in the off season to do list for the Hawks.
With the addition of any of those centers, it would put Marvin on the bench where he belongs. He has shown spurts of greatness here and there, worthy of a number two overall draft selection? I am not sure of that. If somehow the Hawks could trade Marvin to unload his 7.5 million dollar salary, and use it for cap space then that would be the decision the Hawks would do this summer besides sign Joe. Marvin averaged 10 points this year and his high is only 14 points a game for a season, that is not worthy of a contract of that amount.
For the last five years here in Atlanta, Joe Johnson has been considered the man on his team. Hawks fans hope he still wants to be the man because if he signs with the same team as one of the marquee free agents sign with, then he will be the robin to the batman, or be the Scottie Pippen to the Michael Jordan of his new team. Let’s hope newly named coach Larry Drew can sell Joe on his goals and vision for the Hawks, They sign a center, unload Marvin Williams, and Joe Johnson can fight for king of Atlanta with Matt Ryan and Jason Heyward. This would be considered a sunny summer for Joe Johnson, the Atlanta Hawks, and the city of Atlanta.
