Marc Berman of the New York Post has learned that Knicks owner James Dolan will be in Akron to help recruit Lebron James. Donnie Walsh, Mike D’Antoni, and now Dolan plan to meet with The King on Thursday at 1pm, immediately following the Nets presentation.
Here’s an excerpt from the exclusive, first published in Monday’s Post:
Dolan feels he is most adept at explaining to James the Garden’s transformation across the next three years, in which the Knicks owner is spending between $775 to $850 million to beautify “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”
I know what your thinking, “Oh goodness me, James Dolan! Not James Dolan.” I sympathize with that logic and, under no circumstances, believe that Dolan’s presence will be the deciding factor between Lebron coming or not. If anything, it’s nothing more then a hilarious subplot to “Donnie and Mike D’s Excellent Adventure.”
I read this while waiting to be called for jury duty earlier today and two thoughts popped into my head.
One, wouldn’t it be hilarious if Donnie and Mike D had no idea Dolan was on his way and then were surprised to find him standing at the gate when they walked off a red-eye flight from L.A to Ohio? No doubt, he’ll have a goofy chauffeur’s card with the word “destiny” written on it. Mike D would smile a little and say “hey, hey Jimmy’s here!” He looks to his right, only to see a sleep deprived Donnie Walsh looking like he’s just seen a ghost.
Two, I think it’s a mixed bag that the Knicks are following the Nets. Mikhail Prokhorov’s first big free agent pitch? Forget the dogs, trash the ponies, and bring out the lasers and private performance by Jay-Z (with Mikhail on the beat-boxing duties). The Knicks need something to top that. I’ve been thinking about this a few days and after reading Berman’s report, I finally got it.
Dolan has to bring his band! A little discussion about building a team with Donnie. A little Olympic reminiscing with Mike D (“remember when Coach K said this and I agreed”). Followed by a rip-roaring performance by J.D and the Straight Shot (his band). I don’t see how this is a bad plan.
Truthfully, Lebron James’ decision will have nothing to do with what James Dolan has to say about anything other then how cool the new Garden will be…..I think.
- Also from Berman: Allan Houston will be brought in the help recruit free agents. I like this. Houston is a perfect representative for what the Knicks used to be. And really, that’s what the organization is selling, isn’t it?
