Sergei’s gone, just carry on, don’t mourn, rejoice!

News broke in Montreal this afternoon that Sergei Kostitsyn was traded to the Nashville Predators for, well, no one cares. Never in my history of being an avid Canadiens supporter have I seen such unanimous consent among fans to get rid of a player. The younger brother of Andrei Kostitsyn overstayed his welcome, and he essentially wrote his own ticket of town recently when he decided to rip into the organization for trading Halak.

The Canadiens did acquire the rights to 2 UFAs in the deal – goaltender Dan Ellis and center/left wing Dustin Boyd. If they can sign both, that would be great, but even if they don’t, it was worth it to get rid of the headache that was #74. Dan Ellis, 30, is the ideal backup to support Carey Price by playing 25-35 games. Due to the high supply of available goaltenders, Dan Ellis can probably be had for close to $2 million. Dustin Boyd, on the other hand, is a good 2-way forward who can probably chip in with 10-15 goals. He is a very useful player, and I have a feeling that his acquisition may spell the end of Dominic Moore’s tenure with Montreal. The Habs need to be conscious of every dollar they spend, and it’s more cost effective to sign Dustin Boyd for 750k than Moore at 1.5 million.

The Canadiens have until Thursday at noon to get Ellis and/or Boyd under contract before they become unrestricted free agents.
