Richard Jefferson Opts Out of Spurs Contract

Richard Jefferson is no longer a  member of the San Antonio Spurs.According to the the Washington Post [1], Richard Jefferson has opted out of his contract with San Antonio and has become an unrestricted free agent.

That sound you hear is thousands of Spurs fans shrugging their shoulders.

Jefferson would have been paid $15 million for next year.  This past season, his first with the Spurs, he averaged 12.3 points a game, the lowest of his career since he was a rookie.

Truthfully, I don’t blame RJ for leaving.  The team tried to crowbar him into an offense in which he simply didn’t fit.  When Jefferson first came over to San Antonio I was excited.  I thought with him, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker on the floor at the same time the Spurs would be a running, gunning, high-flying offense.  Instead, they kept running their boring set offense and Jefferson struggled.  He is not built to spot up and shoot.  He is build to run and drive the lane.

I hate to say this, because I love Pop, but, this is a case of bad coaching.  Great coaches mold their team’s tactical philosophies the talent they have.  It’s arrogant to think you can make any player fit your style.

Does Pop have a right to be arrogant? Of course.  But he missed on the chance to have a dynamic team with Jefferson.
