The Montreal Alouettes lost 54 to 51 in OT to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a game that may be tagged “Game of the Year” for the 2010 season. What a way to kick off the 2010 CFL season!
The Roughriders came out strong early in the 1st Quarter intercepting Anthony Calvillo’s first pass, which led to a Roughrider field goal. On the first offensive play of the second drive for the Alouettes, Anthony Calvillo got sacked which led to the Als going 2 and out. After that, it was all Alouettes as they scored 2 quick TDs and took the crowd out of the game with a 14 to 3 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams exchanged a TD and Damon Duval kicked a field goal, to give the Als a 24-10 lead at the half. The TD pass that Calvillo threw in the second quarter was his 300th career TD pass in Montreal.
After a 122 yard missed field goal TD return by Tim Maypray to give the Als a 33-12 lead, the Riders scored 3 TDs in 6 minutes of play to tie the game at 33. Both teams scored a TD before the end of the 4th quarter to tie the game at 40 and send it to overtime.
The Riders started with possession in OT and scored a TD and converted the new mandatory 2 point conversion. The Alouettes were on 3rd down in their possession when Calvillo threw an incomplete pass in the end zone to end the game. Wait a sec. There’s a flag on the play. The Roughriders were called for too many on the field!! This was déja-vu all over again. The reaction and the faces of the crowd in Mosaic stadium were priceless. They were in disbelief. The Alouettes get an automatic 1st down within the 10 yard line and score a TD. The Als still needed to convert the 2 point play in order for the game to continue. On that play, Calvillo threw a pass in the end zone in which S.J. Green made an amazing play to catch and this game will continue. The catchmade by Green is an early candidate for catch of the year.
In the second mini-game, Duval kicked a FG to give temporarily the lead to the Als, but the Riderscame back and scored a TD to come out of this amazing game with a victory.
How would the fans, players, coaches, management of the Roughriders would have reacted if they would have lost a second consecutive game because of a too many men on the field penalty? We will never know. Instead, the fans, players, coaches, and management will talk about winning this game as revenge to the Grey Cup game.
The Alouettes play their next game on July 11th on the road against the Edmonton Eskimos.
