The Esks Season Preview

Posted By Mike Wilson On Jul 1 2010 @ 5:18 pm In Edmonton Eskimos | No Comments

The 2010 Grey cup will be help at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton and the Eskimos are hoping to be the ones who use their new state of the art dressing room, and not someone else, on November 28th.

It’s preview time, and i’m here to give you all the info you need about the upcoming Eskimos season.

Lets start with the offence:

Coming into half-way through last season, Offensive Coordinator Kevin Strasser threw in some kinks to a once predictable Eskimo offence and is looking to expand on the progress made during the latter part of last season. The Eskimos offence may have been easy to read at sometimes but that didn’t mean that their opponents could stop them. Rickey Ray threw for 4916 yards last year to lead the league, as he has done in 3 of the past 4. And despite a debut that he would love to forget,  Arkee Whitlock ran for 1293 yards to come third in the overall standings.  Both players are going to be key parts in this offence.

Some key players from last year, 2 acquisitions, and one player from the year before make up the reviving core. Kamau Peterson, Fred Stamps, Efrem Hill, Andrew Nowacki, and Jason Barnes return. Andre Talbot and Brad Smith were shipped from Toronto to E-town in a trade. and Kelly Campbell makes his return after a run at the NFL. Campbell himself adds a deep threat to the Eskies passing game.

Special Teams:

Not much to say but, the kicking job belongs to Noel Prefontaine.

Defense:

Last year the Eskimos secondary was the worst in the league. With head Coach Richie Hall taking over as Defensive coordinator he’s looking to change that and I have no doubt he will. The Eskimos prize off-season acquisition from last year, Maurice Lloyd is looking to have a bounce back season after comming off a year he said was the worst he played as a pro.

Final Prediction:

I believe that with a deadly passing attack and a threat at running back, the Eskimos offence with put fear into the eyes of defenses of teams around the league. Team that up with a defense run by Richie Hall and you have a team I think will make it to the Western Finals or even the Grey Cup.

The Eskimos make their season opener on Sunday against the Lions.
