Sharks land Niittymaki

Sharks brass handled their number one priority, finding a replacement for Evgeni Nabakov. They decided that $6 million plus per year for perennial playoff failure Evgeni Nabakov was too rich. With Patrick Marlowe and Joe Pavelski needing new contracts, the cap space saved by signing Antero Niitymaki was well spent.

Niitymaki brings a 2.98 goals against average and a save percentage of .903 over his career. The potential gamble with Niitymaki is that he has averaged only 33 games a year over his six year career.

At a salary of $2 million a year, Niittymaki is a bargain in today’s market, and we will see if he can maintain a high level as a number one goalie.

Niittymaki was 21-18-5 with a 2.87 goals-against average last year, and his lifetime win / loss is 83-79-28.

Thomas Greiss is expected to be the backup and Alex Stalock provides insurance in case of injuries.
