The 2010 Calgary Stampeders season kicked off with a bit of a thud after an opening quarter that was a bit sloppy, but after that both teams started to shake the pre-season rust off and we got treated to a good ball game which Calgary won 30-16 over the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium in front of a good crowd of 29,333 on a beautiful summer night in the stampede city.
On offense the usual suspects led the charge for the Stamps as Henry Burris completed 27 of 40 pass for 324 yards with only 1 interception as a blemish on an otherwise solid night for the Stamps QB. Joffrey Reynolds was once again solid and showed why he is still the premier running back in the CFL with 116 yards on 17 carries and a TD adding one catch for ten yards as well. Eight different players caught passes for Calgary with Rombe Bryant leading the way with 6 grabs for 113 yards. Nik Lewis also had 7 catches for 74 yards in the win.
On the defensive side of the ball no one player really stood out for the Stamps but as a unit they did a great job of keeping the Argos in check all night. Calgary forced 4 fumbles and had one interception. One of the fumbles was picked up by Malik Jackson for a score after Wes Lysack sacked Toronto QB Cleo Lemon to really put the game to bed for the Stampeders. George, and McCartney also chipped in with one sack each.
On Special Teams rookie kicker Rob Maver had a great debut hitting 5 of his 6 field goal tries with his only miss coming from 42 yards. but still producing the single point on the miss. The kid has a strong leg and it showed. Burke Dales was as solid as ever punting the ball as he hit 6 punts with a 42 yard average. The big let down for the punt team was Chad Owens returning one 90 yards for a TD to keep the Argos in the game. And it was a spectacular run back! For the Stamps Deon Murphy ran 3 punts back for 108 yards, but between the returns and his 3 catches in the game he put the ball on the turf 3 times fortunately only losing one of the fumbles.
Next up for the Stamps is a date in Hamilton with the Tiger Cats on Saturday July 10th at 1pm EST and I believe the NFL network will be picking up that game for all you Americans who would like to check out a game after seeing the wild 54-51 win for the Roughriders over the Alouettes in double OT!
Have a good one!
