Why Lose UFAs for Nothing???

What I don’t understand is why do the Sens keep losing their UFAs for nothing? If they want to resign someone, Murray can just start the process ahead of time, and give a firm deadline for the negotiation… and if agents play hardball, at least they can pretty well figure out what it will take to resign the player.

Kovalchuk was worth two good players, a prospect and a first-round draft pick at the trade deadline. We could have received at least a defenseman and a first round draft pick for Volchenkov. Just imagine what we could have received for Chara at the trade deadline!

I know that the obvious answer here is that we want to win in the playoffs, and we are hoping that we can resign guys… I just think the negotiation can be managed better so that we figure out what it will take to resign someone, and we go from there before losing a player for nothing.

This year it’ll be Chris Phillips’ turn, and we may lose him as a UFA for nothing too.
