Draft Picks for Rental Players is Bad Practice!!!
Posted By Marvin Miller On Jul 6 2010 @ 9:42 am In NHL | No Comments
If NHL organizatons really do their jobs well, there are NHL-ready players prepared to step in when injuries come heading into the playoffs. Handing over a second round pick for a rental player for the most part bad practice.
In comes this player to a close-knit team and takes away the ice time from some player who has worked hard all year… affecting these big-egoed players way more than they will admit… and when all said and done for the most part, the player leaves to the highest bidder and the team is left with nothing.
So unless you win the cup because of the contributions of this rental player, giving the draft pick away wasn’t worth it. Scroll through the rental players in the past ten years and you’ll find that the teams for the most part gave away their draft picks for very little in return.
Teams that win do that because of the contributions of the lower salaried draft picks coming through. I hate that expression “Your best players have to be your best players.” It’s the third and fourth line that needs to come through as well for it all to work. And where do these players come from? You guessed it… mostly from the draft.
Teams like the Leafs who have limited young talent coming through the system have no chance to build a winner, because there is only so much salary to spread around. So giving away draft picks doesn’t work… period… except sometimes… Are you listening Burke?
