Cards Swept By Rockies….Painfully

The Cardinals lost three games in a row to Colorado, and fell to three games behind the Reds in the division.  Everything looked great for the Cardinals going into the ninth inning of their game Tuesday against the Rockies.  They had a 9-3 lead.  Reliever Dennys Reyes came in and gave up three runs.

That’s ok.  They still had closer Ryan Franklin available to come in a preserve the three run lead.  Well, he gave up six runs in his third of an the inning and the Cardinals lost the game 12-9.

That loss was heartbreaking, but it was only one game.  They play 162 so one game shouldn’t matter all that much.

Then Wednesday happened.  The Cardinals were up 7-4 in the eighth inning.  Rockies hitter Dexter Fowler came up with two men on.  He then produced a swing that was best described as a swat and slap.  The ball sailed over the wall for a three run homer, bringing Fowler’s home run total for the season to….two.

With the game tied the Cardinals did not score in the ninth.  In the bottom of the ninth they brought in rookie reliever Evan MacLane, for his for first major league action ever.  The first batter he faced was Chris Iannetta.  He worked Iannetta to a full count and then….ding!  Home run.  Goodnight.  Game Over.  Welcome to the majors kid.

These games set up a showdown today.  Both teams had their aces on the mound.  Ubaldo Jimenez of Colorado submitted another dominating performance, going eight innings and giving up only one run.  Chris Carpenter got touched up pitching for the Cards.  He gave up four runs in six innings and took the loss.

The Cardinals now find themselves three and half games back of the Reds, with only one series left before the All-Star break.  They play the lowly Astros while the Reds will have their hands full with the Phillies.  Hopefully the Cards will be able to game some ground in the next few days.

They certainly don’t want to go into the break in a worse position than they are now.
