So Long Evgeni!!!

If you look around the NHL these days, you’ll see that there are precious few of the so called “great” goalies who are worth their high salaries. How many goalies are consistently great during the regular season and during the playoffs?

Evgeni Nabakov said good-bye to the Sharks in favour of heading to the KHL for some tax-free money that he could not get in the NHL.

While Nabakov, Ryan Miller, Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo fell flat on their belly pads during the playoffs last year, it was the close to minimum wage guys who emerged with supreme confidence in the playoffs.

So is it worth it to invest $6 million a year on a goalie? The Sharks appear to be going in a new direction with young goalies like Thomas Greiss and Alex Stalock.

The lesson here is to not dish out these ridiculous contracts to a goalie because he got hot for a few months (a la Jose Theodore, Christobal Huet¬†and Ray Emery). Most NHL goalies are capable¬†of getting hot for a while, but the real test for a goalie is consistency over time… especially in the playoffs.
