Cliff Lee. Sold!

There are times in professional sports where a trade really does work out well for all parties involved, and this appears to be a classic example. The Seattle Mariners have trade SP Cliff Lee,RP Mark Lowe, and cash to the Texas Rangers for 1B Justin Smoak, 2B Matthew Lawson, and pitchers Blake Beaven and Josh Lueke.
The Seattle Mariners are going through a season that has been a disaster after being the sexy dark horse pick to make the post season the Mariners have not been able to get out of their own way despite some excellent pitching all year. Cliff Lee was 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 89 K’s against only 6 walks! Lee was also a class player for the M’s all year and I wish him the best in Texas.
Mark Lowe has had some back problems but when healthy he has provided some solid relief for the Mariners. Lowe was 1-3 with a 3.48 ERA but has only made 11 appearances this season. He should give the Rangers additional depth for their playoff run.
In return the Mariners get 4 good prospects. The highlight to the package is Smoak who has had a rough rookie campaign in the majors hitting only .209 with 8 HR and 34 RBI in 70 games, but he has a ton of upside and could be the long term solution for Seattle at 1st base for years to come.
Beaven, Lueke, and Lawson have all been solid in Double A Frisco. Lawson is going to the all star game, while Beaven is 10-5 with a 2.78 ERA and was just promoted to Triple A. Beaven was also the 17th overall pick in 2007 and he could be a gem. Lueke has some nasty stuff and was recently promoted to Double A and could make the big club’s bullpen in a couple years.
The question that is left for Seattle would be is there another trade or two to come to stock the cupboard?
Have a good one!
