Jets Reward Ferguson With New Deal; Revis Still Waits

Take note, Darrelle Revis and Nick Mangold:
Sometimes, it pays to be the “good soldier”.
The New York Jets gave T D’Brickashaw Ferguson a big reward for playing nice in the form of a six year, $60 million extension to his existing contract.
If the extension goes to it’s full length, Ferguson will earn $73.6 million over the next eight years.
One caveat: Barely any of this money is guaranteed, but that’s the risk that NFL players agreed to take in the last Colective Bargaining Agreement.
The fact that Ferguson wasn’t pressing for a new deal but the Jets decided to deal with him first is a direct reflection of how they feel about the fact that both Revis and Mangold have gone to the press with their demands for new contracts.
Revis wants to be the highest paid cornerback in the league, something the Jets are willing to do for him, just not in his time frame. They also wouldn’t guarantee all the money simply because they don’t have to.
Mangold is in the same boat as Revis.
Neither Mangold or Revis will hold out because they would incur fines if they did so. Their leverage is minimal, so they have both taken the immature (and rarely effective)route of complaining about their situations in the press.
The Jets will eventually compromise with both of them, but it won’t be tomorrow.
That’s what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you.
