The Calgary Stampeders defeated the Hamilton Tiger Cats 23-22 in front of 25,248 fans at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium. The best part of the story leading into the game was Sandro Deangelis. Sandro was the kicker for the Calgary Stampeders for the past 6 seasons and probably the best in the league. However after last years fight with punter Burke Dales, Sandro was not re-signed when he became a free agent and took it rather personally bashing the players and Stampeders organization. The Stampeders kept quiet and with their first pick in the Canadian College draft they selected K Rob Maver.
One kicker was 2/4 one was 3/3 want to guess which one was which? Deangelis was 2/4 for the Tabbies which was clearly the difference in the game especially on one of the misses that was returned 105 yards settings up a Stampeders touchdown. Sandro’s fifth attempt of the game from 59 yards with no time left was blocked. He missed from 35 and 42 yards respectively.
Henry Burris was solid again for the Stamps. The Calgary QB was 24/37 for 257 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Henry also lost a fumble. Joffrey Reynolds was the same old Joffrey gaining 98 yards on 15 carries, he also caught one ball for 6 yards. PK Sam led the Calgary receivers with 7 catches for 62 yards. 7 different players caught a pass while Nik Lewis and Rombe Bryant scored TD’s for the Stampeders. K Rob Maver was 3/3 and had a good day in front of friends and family.
The other problem Hamilton had was their ineffectiveness on the ground. RB Deandra Cobb only had 37 yards on 13 carries. QB Kevin Glenn had a good day for the Ticats going 26/34 for 356 yards with 1 TD and no interceptions. WR Marcus Thigpen came off of his 2 kick returns for TD’s in the first game of the year by returning another punt for a touchdown and caught one ball for 33 yards and scored on it as well!
The (2-0) Calgary Stampeders have a short week as they will drive up the road to Toronto and the Rogers Centre to take on the (1-1) Toronto Argonauts on Wednesday at 7:30pm EST. This will be a rematch of their week 1 encounter in Calgary that had the Stampeders defeating the Argos 30-16 at McMahon Stadium.
Have a good one!
