The Champs Roar Back To Win

The Montreal Alouettes rolled into Commonwealth Stadium to take on the Edmonton Eskimos with both teams having lost their first game of the year. The Esks came out flying in the first half highlighted by Ricky Ray’s 43 yard TD pass to WR Fred Stamps. However the Montreal defense did a great job of holding the Eskimos to field goals in the 2nd quarter. and Edmonton went into the locker room with a 16-11 lead as Montreal only could muster one touchdown on a Ricky Santos 2 yard touchdown scamper.

The 3rd quarter started the same for Edmonton as they could only manage field goals and had built their lead to 23-11. Drops killed the Eskimos they dropped a couple sure touchdowns but the worst one was Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps in stride that would have put the game away. Stamps had no one within 5 yards of him and took his eye off the ball and muffed a sure touchdown.

That was the opening the Alouettes needed. Anthony Calvillo torched the secondary of the Eskimos in the 2nd half starting with a TD pass to Brian Bratton to get Montreal within 5 after 3 quarters the score was 23-18. The Als finally got to Ricky Ray and forced a bad pass that was picked off and returned for a 22 yard touchdown by Jerald Brown. Calvillo completed the 2 point conversion to gives the Als their first lead since midway through the 1st quarter. The Als quickly got the ball back and Calvillo hooked up with Kerry Watkins for a 6 yard score, and a 33-23 lead that the Als would never relinquish sending the Eskimos fans home shocked and wondering what had just happened.

Have a good one!
