Bombers vs Ti-Cats Round 2 Preview

In preparation for the game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats there have been plenty of changes for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week.  Some are necessary because of injury, some because of poor performance.  Special teams have seen the addition of last year’s super stud LB Derrick Doggett as a top notch coverman on the punting and kicking teams.  Doggett has returned from a failed tryout with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.  Marcus Howell has left retirement and joined the punt/kick return teams to allow for a veteran presence. Jovon Johnson will see less time returning punts.

On the injury front, Ian Logan and Dorion Smith joined the 1 game injured list while Brady Browne starts for Logan and Moton Hopkins comes off the practice Roster to replace Smith.

Looking ahead to the game, the Bombers bring their second rated offense into the Hammer sporting the second highest point and yardage totals.  Buck Pierce leads the CFL in quarterback efficiency.  When was the last time that was said about a Bomber QB?  Terence Edwards and Terence Jeffers-Harris are in the top 10 for receiving yards.  Alexis Serna is second in points scored by kickers.  All those stats may be a reflection of who the Bombers have played so far this year, but as of right now  Toronto has a winning record and even against poorer teams the 2009 Bombers didn’t perform like this.

Defensively, the Bombers are ranking in the upper half of most stats kept by CFL.ca including giving up the fewest yards passing.   Another reflection of teams played or will this team be good?  The one glaring weakness is special teams.  Missed fieldgoals have killed the Bombers so far.  It starts with Serna, but the guys covering the kick have to make the stops when needed.

You’d have to think that the Ti-Cats will be hungry for this game after starting the season at 0-2.  But you’d also have to think that the Bombers  would be a lot hungrier too after letting a winnable game slip away last week.  The game is at 7pm Eastern, 6pm Central tomorrow night on TSN.
