The players want him to be the new head of the NHLPA. I don’t blame them I would too if I were a player.
Donald Fehr has consistently said he is just an unpaid adviser. He has done a lot to help the players get their heads out of their collective ahem you know.
Mr. Fehr scares the heck out of me for one reason. Look at what he did for the MLBPA. He’s seen work stoppages before. He has taken on one of the largest sports leagues in the world and won.
Major League Baseball as we all know has a luxury tax which affects four or five teams, however as we all know there is no competitive balance in MLB. Ask a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates or Baltimore Orioles if they honestly believe their team will contend for a championship, or even threaten for a playoff spot.
Donald Fehr and the players killed the 1994 MLB season and in turn the Montreal Expos. He is also likely the best sports union head of all time and if he were to accept the head of the NHLPA I fear that we will soon be riding the lightning towards a new work stoppage in the NHL.
Does anyone truly believe that if Donald Fehr is the new head of the NHLPA that he will accept a restrictive salary cap, a player maximum cap, escrow, or a set percentage of profits that the players may only draw from? Is Donald Fehr going to be intimidated by the NHL or Gary Bettman?
Are the NHL owners going to back away from the salary cap? Of course not. The NHL will be trying to lower the salary floor, because if they don’t then within five years upwards of six teams could have to close up shop. It’s no secret that there are teams that are having trouble making the salary floor and are guaranteed to lose money, and the economy is just not getting better.
Donald Fehr scares the heck out of me not because he is a bad person or he has bad intentions for our game. He scares me because he is so damn good at is job and the players will buy in to whatever he tells them. So if Donald Fehr tells the players he can get them a better deal if they hold tough the players will hold tough.
Have a good one!
