Twins Right Where They Want To Be

All right, maybe they’d rather be in first place 10 games up on the surging White Sox and Tigers but the Twins are in familiar territory looking up just 1.5 games back mid way through the season with 71 games to go.

With a huge comeback scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth yesterday against the White Sox, the Pirahna’s, as Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen has named them, took 3 of 4 games  at Target Field, to move up 2 full games in the division.  They are now in a virtual tie with The Tigers who also lost yesterday.

The past few seasons they seem to have been in 2nd or 3rd place almost all season only to make a September run and end up playing for the  the division title.  In the last two seasons the Twins have played 163 regular season games because of the tiebreaker rule.

In 2008 they played the White Sox in the infamous blackout Divisional Championship game in which the White Sox fans all wore black during a night game at U.S. Cellular Field.  The final score was 1-0 in favor of the White Sox.

In 2009, they played the Tigers in one of the most exciting baseball games in Minnesota history, coming back to beat the Tigers in one of the last games at the old Metrodome.

This year, it looked like they would run away with the division but in the past month, they have had injuries to Mauer, Morneau, & Hardy.  Justin Morneau is still out and day to day with concussion symtoms  nagging the Twins All-Star.  He was unable to play in this year’s game after being the top vote getter among First-baseman.

Pitching has improved after hitting the wall in June.  Carl Pavano, Fransico Liriano and Brian Duensing are throwing lights out right now.  And closer Joe Nathan has already started throwing  in hopes of coming back for the start of next season.

So, it’s safe to say anything can and will happen in the AL Central but the Twins will be there at the end and will give the Tigers or White Sox nightmares like they do every year.
