UFC Versus 2 Preview

Hey Fellow Sports Fans,

This is my first time blogging on the site, so we’ll try to keep things  light for the first couple go-arounds.

Next up for the UFC is Versus 2 on August with the main event of Johnny  Bones vs big Vlad Matyushenko.  Now for anyone who follows the UFC, Mr.  Bones is essentially an undefeated fighter, dispite the DQ loss to an  over-matched Hamill.  Vlad on the other hand is a fighter with a ton of  experience (24 wins, 4 losses), and is currently on a 11-1 streak dating  back to 2005.  This should be a good test for Jones, who is looking to  climb the UFC rankings and potentially face top end talent later in 2010.   I’d think a potential match against someone like Forrest Griffin would  serve the company well, assuming he makes it past ‘the Janitor’.

The other fight I have a lot of interest in is the Gomi vs Griffin fight.   Both fighters are 2-2 in their last 4 fights, but what interests me, is  how Takanori Gomi responds after being soundly beaten by Kenny Florian in  his first UFC event.  I have hope that the semi-legendary Gomi from Japan  comes back, but based on the last few fights, I’m wondering if his time as  a top contender has passed.  Both combatants are numerous wins away from a  number one contender or title fight, but a loss would certainly put huge  question marks on what the UFC does with them next.  Can anyone say  Gatekeeper?

As for the rest of the card, there isn’t too much else that I’m overly  excited for.  Doomsday Howard will try to extend his fight winning streak  to 8, while Ellenberger will try to make it two wins in a row.  The Munoz  vs Okami fight might be a decent scrap, maybe the winner will make it on  to an upcoming UFC PPV?

*  Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko    Jones via Rd2-TKO
* Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami        Okami via Decision
* Jake Ellenberger vs. John Howard    Howard via Decision
* Takanori Gomi vs. Tyson Griffin    Griffin via Lay n’ Pray Decision

Up next week, we’ve got UFC 117.  I’m not sure about the rest of you, but  I’m pretty stoked about the entire card.  Even the undercard has great  potential fights, when you’ve got guys like Thiago Silva and Ben Saunders fighting on potentially non-televised matches against their respective  opponents.
