The HOV Effect

Posted By Bennett Snyder On Jul 28 2010 @ 3:24 pm In New Jersey Nets | No Comments

In the semi-recent song “Empire State of Mind”, Jay-Z said, “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can”. This might not be true, but he has been rocking the NY Yankees hat for a while and helped contribute to it’s popularity. This brings us to the question of why can’t he help the Nets franchise, you know the one where he is a partial owner. There even was a huge billboard on the side of a building in New York, that showed Jay-Z and Mikhail Prokhorov together, underneath reading “The Blueprint”. Blueprint for what, not delivering?

Years ago when he bought a piece of the Nets, people became joyous over the future of the franchise. “Jay-Z is going to bring us to Brooklyn”. Well that still hasn’t happened, although it might in a few years, but that is up to Prokhorov. This on one hand upset some of the Jersey fans, but moving to Brooklyn would ultimately help their appeal.

” Jay-Z is good friends with LeBron and other NBA stars,  he will help bring them here”. Although the first part of the statement is true, the second not so much. Yes, he is friends with LeBron, if you ever heard the DeShawn Stevenson dis-song defending Lebron [1], it’s pretty funny. However, his popularity and his friendships couldn’t help land any of the big time free agents in Jersey.

I recently read an article where it mentioned Jay-Z being mad at LeBron because him not coming, nor anyone else coming, to Jersey made Young HOV look useless to the Nets new brass. I don’t know if I would go as far as to call him useless because he is super rich and has connections. He, however, has not delivered. So far, the HOV effect has been minimal at best. It had people excited when he first owned a share, but after this failure of an off-season, it has these same people double guessing themselves. Perhaps if the Nets move to the BK, then the Jigga Man will have some real pull and bring over the stars.
