Before he could even strap on his pads, TE Brad Cottam got word from the Chiefs front office that he will be placed on the Reserve/PUP (Physically unable to perform) list due to a neck injury he suffered in Week 15 of last season against the Cleveland Browns, thus ending his season. This news shakes up what was already a contentious position battle at the tight end spot, opening the door for youngsters like second year player Jake O’Connell, and rookies Tony Moeaki and Cody Slate.
Cottam was looking to make strides this off season, but was unable to practice during the entire off season with such a serious injury. Now that he is on the Reserve/PUP this is different then during the season, as Cottam can be taken of the PUP list at anytime during camp as long as the doctors clear him, however this move was made with the notion that he will not be coming back for the 2010-2011 season. The most important thing for Cottam is that he gets the necessary treatment and physical therapy.
Big things are expected from the rookie Moeaki and with this news O’Connell and Slate are going
to be looking to make their mark, since they will be receiving a substantial increase in training camp reps.
We wish Cottam a healthy recovery so that he may be able to get back on the field and make some key contributions down the road. However, as sports fans we tend to get caught up in winning and when it comes to injuries we tend to become heartless and cruel; their is life after football and certain precautions must be taken. We wish the best to Cottam and his family.
