The Padres went out and made one of the moves they needed to make, on Thursday. They brought in veteran infielder Miguel Tejada from the Baltimore Orioles. Tejada is one of the guys I mentioned earlier in the week as a possibility, this is not a move that is going to blow anyone away but it does make the team better. Costing the Padres a good minor league prospect in RHP Wynn Pelzer but not one of our top prospects, and only 1.16 million left on Tejada’s contract is what made the deal well worth it. Although not sure what position he will play in the field, his lack of defense at this point in his career can be overlooked because of the professional bat that he brings. While watching the three game series against the Dodgers in Petco it is clear that the Padres need another bat that you can rely on for a strong professional at bat. At this point in his career Evereth Cabrera does not give this to the Padres. Even though the Pads won two out of the three games with pitching and defense because that is what they do. Opposing pitchers around the league especially on the Giants and Dodgers look at the Padres line up and they are not afraid of anyone with the exception of Gonzalez. Guys like hairston jr., Cabrera, Gwynn, and Venable, hitting below .250 is just not enough punch in a line up of a playoff team. The proof is in the pudding the at bats the Padres had against the Dodgers in the last series were not of a high caliber. Way too many strike outs, swinging at bad pitches and looking at good ones, something Miguel Tejada can change hitting in the middle of this line up. Look for Tejada to play a lot of shortstop and third base against left handed pitching while hitting fourth or fifth in the line up. As for any other moves the Padres may make still looking for another solid starting pitcher, remember the trade deadline does end Saturday. Although every year people are moved after the trade deadline if they clear waivers, even big name players.
