Weekly Tidbits

Well another week draws to a close and we’re left with a couple of interesting tid-bits this week.

First off, it’s been another week of fighters coming up limp.  Thiago Silva is out with an injury for UFC 117, and Phil Baroni is also of UFC 118.  While neither of these injuries is devastating to the upcoming PPVs, I’m still disappointed.   Both guys, win or loose, usually put on a good show and throw caution to the wind and I expected both of their fights to be televised as fillers at the end of the PPV.  Too bad!

Secondly, I find the announced match-up of Ortiz vs Hamill to be very intriguing.   Obviously Tito is desperate for a win as his last two victories came against Kenny Shamrock back in 2006.  It doesn’t seem that long, but if this fight happens at UFC 121, Ortiz will have gone just shy of 4 full years without having his hand raised in the Octagon.  Ortiz can certainly talk up a good fight, and still has some drawing power, so I suspect the UFC will retain his services even if he does loose, but any chance at one final title shot (how ever unlikely that is) has to start at UFC 121.  For Matt Hamill, he has 10 fights under the UFC banner, and sports a record of 8-2.  Now he certainly lost the fight against Jones, although because of the disqualification, it does count as a win, (I firmly believe he got completely screwed in the fight against Bisping, so I guess the UFC gods evened out his record), and therefore his 4 fight win steak is on the line.    My super early ‘seat of my pant’s’ prediction has Hamill winning this behind his odd striking style and usually his wrestling background.

Has anyone else seen the interview by James Toney that recently aired in Canada on “the Score”?  I know Toney likes to joke around, and is certainly doing his best to promote a fight, but I’m starting to wonder how serious he’s really taking this fight.  I hope he is, as the UFC certainly doesn’t need a main event PPV fight turning into some kind of strange debacle.  I can’t see Randy Couture being anything less then a complete professional, so hopefully Toney does the same by training, and not gassing at the 30second mark of the first round ala Round 2 Shane Carwin.

Lastly, Dana White commented that with a win Yushin Okami might be building up towards a title fight if he pulls off a win on Saturday.  The only way I see this happening is an obvious win against Munoz, and then a match-up and win against someone like Nate Maquardt or Demian Maia.  Vitor Belfort I still believe will be in line to fight the winner of Silva / Sonnen, so it only makes sense to have Marquardt/Maia or Okami working their way up to a shot after ‘the Phenom” has his.
Keep an eye on the absolutely sick card that is rumored for UFC 121.   Ridiculous if it all comes to pass
Blog you all later next week!
