The title is not a prediction. Nor is it a nightmare though that’s what it seems like. It’s the very near future, and it’s real. No I don’t own a Delorean. I didn’t travel one week ahead to find this out. But quite possibly the next best thing. I have it from a source very close to the team and Mike Modano that he will announce it in the next week or so when he returns from his trip to Scotland. It will be a one year deal with the dollar figure not exceeding more than a million dollars.
In one way, I’m relieved to finally know what’s going on. Even though it hasn’t been announced yet. There’s been so much uncertainty with not only Mike’s future ( thanks Joe ), but with the ownership of the team as well. As a Stars fan for the past 26 years or so, this has been possibly the worst off-season yet. Not that I’m happy about him signing somewhere else. If you read my entry on Modano a couple weeks ago or if you know me at all, you would know I wanted nothing more than for him to play on as a Star. I was devastated when Joe announced he wouldn’t be offering him a new contract. But the past few weeks have been like that movie Groundhog Day. And we’ve all been a bunch of Bill Murrays. The same thing over and over. Waking up wondering, and going to bed not knowing. When the announcement was made a few weeks ago, as hard as it was we all had to face the possibility that he would sign somewhere else. I eventually set it in my mind that if he’s going to sign somewhere, best case scenarios would be Detroit or Minnesota. Atleast neither is in our division, and they both make sense. Detroit being where he’s from, and Minny of course being where he began his career with the North Stars. And neither are the Sharks or Ducks.
So what now ? I guess we can spend the next couple months coming to grips with reality. That our Mike Modano will be wearing the winged wheel come next season. Not only that, when we see that jersey flapping in his wind, the #9 likely won’t be on it. Of course, #9 being retired in Detroit by Mr.Hockey himself, Gordie Howe. So unless Gordie honors Mike with the number, my guess is that he will wear #27. Nobody on the Wings wears it as of now. It’s also what he wore in the 1999 and 2000 NHL All Star games since Paul Kariya was given seniority due to being named the starter at left wing both years. Modano chose the #27 because of Darryl Sittler. Will I be purchasing a Red Wings jersey with Modano on the back ? I doubt it. But I will be cheering for him. I think it would be selfish to cheer against him. After all he’s given us over the years, he deserves our support. So I wish him nothing but success.
So prepare yourselves Stars fans. And remember, don’t shoot the messenger.
