The Als hold on to their biggest asset

The Montreal Alouettes announced on Wednesday that they have signed their GM to a contract extension until the end of the 2014 season. The story that initially broke out on July 22nd by TSN and relayed on this site ( http://prosportsblogging.com/cfl-football/montreal-alouettes/live-blog-tigercats-vs-alouettes-730pm-et/ [1] ) is great news for Alouettes fans across the country.

“We’ve had one asset — Jim Popp,” Als owner Robert Wetenhall said at a news conference. “Jim, and Jim alone, kept this team together in 1996. He has put winning teams on the field. He built the team through five head coaches, year in and out.

“He’s a winner.”

And so are the Alouettes with Popp as GM. Popp has been the only GM of the franchise since the team moved from Baltimore to Montreal. The Alouettes have a record of 168-88-1, have never missed the playoffs, played in 7 Grey Cup finals and won 2 of them since Popp took over in 1996.

Every off-season, Popp is always rumored to be heading south to the NFL and the fact that he sold his house in Montreal and moved his entire family to Charlotte, N.C. did not help those rumors. In Wednesday’s press conference, Popp said that he never had a doubt that Montreal is where he wanted to stay.

Through numerous coaches, and player changes over the years, the Alouettes only had 1 losing record under the control of Jim Popp, and that was in 2007 when Popp was the head coach.

Wednesday’s news is great for the organization…unless Popp decides to go behind the bench.

The Alouettes host the Roughriders on Friday at Molson Stadium.
