Guess Who’s Baaaack?

Isiah Thomas has been hired as a consultant by the Knicks, giving the team’s former president and head coach an official role with the organization.
Thomas’ position will be in a part-time capacity and he will remain head coach at Florida International.
On the surface, this seams like some pretty hefty bridge – jumping stuff. There is absolutely no way bring Thomas back is a good idea. He did almost nothing right during his Knicks tenure.
Whether it was making bad coaching decisions, bad personnel decisions, sexually assaulting employees, driving a once proud franchise into the ground, or any other unfortunate side effect of the Isiah Thomas era (leave your favorite in the comment section), his reign was filled with some of the most head scratching moments in the history of New York basketball. Why the Knicks wouldn’t want to do everything in their power to try and rid themselves of anything and everything Isiah Thomas is a question that shouldn’t even have to be posed in casual conversation, let alone written in this space.
But that’s precisely the nature of James Dolan. This is a guy who kept Isiah on simply because he liked the guy. He only fired him because he feared a fan mutiny. If bringing Thomas back into the organization proves anything, it’s that Dolan never wanted to fire him in the first place, he just figured he had to or ticket sales would take a bigger nose dive then they already had up to that point.
It’s still hard to believe that Thomas’s status as a “consultant” is anything more then a glorified talent evaluator. I still don’t buy that he will be doing anything that will greatly affect the product on the floor. Remember, he was always known as a good talent evaluator, just not a good anything else. The Knicks know this. Amar’e or no Amar’e, there is no way that the Knicks brass could sell that. After all, they can barely sell a consulting gig.
