Look, I highly doubt that Boston will manage to get back into the playoff picture, but I’m still going to the Bronx this weekend to check out the action for myself. The Boston – New York rivalry is simply the best in all of sports.
Yankees fans hate the Boston players with a passion as well as Francona AND his granny glasses. Red Sox fans return the vitriol. I’m sure they have something pithy to say about Joe Girardi’s haircut. Whatever. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if the teams are separated by one game or 20. The teams play as if it’s a World Series regardless.
I remember a particular doubleheader at Yankee Stadium when I was a kid (a real doubleheader where one ticket got you both games and they didn’t make you leave between the two). It was beach towel day and the beer vendors just kept selling. I think the Yankees might have been mathematically eliminated by that point (the 80s were some lean years) but the Stadium was packed. Fights were breaking out everywhere and someone tried to repel down from the upper deck by tying a bunch of beach towels together. That didn’t go so well for him. Anyway, it was an EVENT. A spectacle. This weekend should be no different.
Since then, they’ve built a new stadium, started charging $20 for beer, stop selling it in the seventh inning, and have fewer fistfights overall. The Yankees have won a bunch of World Series and Boston even snapped the Curse of the Bambino. But one thing still remains – these teams will battle each other until the end. Even with a spot in the post-season seemingly off the table for one of them, pride still commands a pretty high value.
