UFC 117 Preview

UFC 117 is a pretty exciting card.  It’s got the Middlweight Championship on the line, and according to Dana White today, the winner of Alves v Fitch will earn the number one contender spot against the winner of Koscheck and GSP.  The card also features Big Country Roy Nelson and JR Dos Santos, who I would assume will face the winner of Carwin vs Lesnar later this year.

Now, speaking of Alves and Fitch, it’s now confirmed that Thiago Alves once again failed to make the 170lb weight limit for his fight against Fitch tomorrow night.  Alves was 1.5lbs over (technically 170.5lb would have been accepted), and as such as forfeited 20% of his fight purse directly to Johnny Fitch.  This drastically changes the fight dynamic in my opinion.  We can assume that Alves was probably pushing himself ridiculously hard to make weight, and as such is probably going to show signs of fatigue tomorrow night, especially against someone like Fitch who loves to grind out 15minute lay n’ pray specials.  On top of that, you have to wonder what type of mental state Thiago is going to be in.  White may have indicated that the winner would face GSP, but as that fight hasn’t been signed, you have to wonder if Dana is going to risk having Alves rematch against GSP as a missed weight for a title fight means the title is not on the line.  I was going to predict a win for Fitch by top mount control, but with this development, I’m going to actually suggest something crazy…. Fitch might actually win by something other then Judge’s decision

Dos Santos vs Nelson should be an awesome fight.  It’s going to either show case Roy’s ability to take out top level competition, or it’s going to rocket Dos Santos up the Heavyweight rankings, predictably to the #1 contender spot.  I figure a win by Nelson will put him in line to fight the winner of Mir or Big Nog later this year, while a loss will see him fight the loser of the aforementioned tilt.  I’m really looking forward to this fight, and truthfully don’t have a personal favorite going into the fight.  I think a win/loss by either fighter will lead to interesting match-ups.

I’ll admit that Matt Hughes was a terrific fighter, but frankly, I can’t stand him.  I’m pulling for Almedia to win this fight, as seeing the smug look on the face of Hughes makes me angry.   I’m sort of in the same boat for dos Anjos and Guida.  I don’t like Guida.  I don’t care for his hair, the way he fights, or the way he seems to think he’s better then he really is.  Guida is an average fighter, having a UFC record of 6-5, and  in my opinion, relies on wrestling to hold opponents down, while inflicting little to no damage.  I’m hoping for Anjos to win this, while still putting on an entertaining fight.

The last fight on the televised card is the Middlweight championship of Anderson Silva v Chael Sonnen.  Not that this is a big stretch, but I expect Silva to retain his belt, and regain some of the prestige he’s lost over the last few fights.  With all the trash talking that Sonnen has done, the fan backlash from Silva’s last fight debacle,  and maybe most importantly, the cutting remarks of Dana White, I expect Silva will come out like he did early in his UFC career and wipe the mat with Sonnen.  On top of that, there has to be some motivation to jump up the pound for pound rankings with Fedor having lost earlier this year.  My own persoal top P4P fighter is definitely GSP, but with a convincing win, Anderson could jump up to the #2 or #3 spot behind GSP and Jose Aldo.  With talk from the Silva camp that his fighting career could becoming to a close in the next short while I don’t think he wants his legacy to be remembered by brutal fights to Cote and Maia and a loss to Sonnen.

185 lbs.: Anderson Silva (184.5) vs. Chael Sonnen (185) – Silva via TKO

170 lbs.: Ricardo Almeida (170.5) vs. Matt Hughes (170.5)  – Hughes via Decision
265 lbs.: Junior Dos Santos (240) vs. Roy Nelson (263) – BIIIIIG Country via TKO
170 lbs.: Thiago Alves (171.5)* vs. Jon Fitch (170.5) – Fitch via TKO
155 lbs.: Rafael dos Anjos (156) vs. Clay Guida (156) – Guida via Lay n’ Pray

Until next week!
