2010 Cincinnati Bengals Preview- Defensive Line

Posted By Adrian Fedkiw On Aug 8 2010 @ 5:32 pm In Cincinnati Bengals | No Comments

Last year, the defensively line improved at stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback.  During a 9 game stretch, the Bengals defense held opponents to less than 100 yards rushing.  As for the sack department, Cincinnati went from sacking the quarterback 17 times in 2008 (30th in the NFL) to 34 times in 2009 (16th in the NFL).

The line mightily struggled against the run late in the season as they allowed 4 100+ yard rushers in their final 5 games.  To give them a bit of due, they did play without defensive tackle Domata Peko.

LDE- Robert Geathers- 36 tck  3.5 sck  1 ff  3 p def

Geathers is a solid player.  He’s still yet to get back to his level in 2006 where he had 10 sacks.

LDT- Domata Peko- 23 tck 1 p def

Peko is one of the more underrated defensive tackles in the game.  He’s quick and strong, and he excels in the run game.  The Bengals run defense missed his presence the final 5 games as he suffered through a knee injury.

One of the rookie training camp rituals is for rookies get some cool looking hair cuts.  Yet, no one compares to the hair of Peko.  His hair is the epitome of awesomeness.

(Domata Peko)

RDT- Tank Johnson- 29 tck  2 sck  1 p def

Johnson fit in well into Mike Zimmer’s defensive scheme.  He quietly had a solid season.

RDE- Antwan Odom- 19 tck  8 sck  1 p def

Through 6 games, Odom had 8 sacks and led the NFL in sacks.  The he suffered an achilles tear, and missed the rest of the season.

Odom is strong and powerful.  He uses his hands well and he’s now closing the deal once he gets near teh quarterback.

DE- Jonathan Fanene- 36 tck  6 sck  1 int  2 p def

Fanane stepped and played well in Odom’s absence.  He’s strong against the run and rushed the quarterback well.

DE- Carlos Dunlap- ROOKIE

Dunlap is a 1st round talent who fell to the 2nd round because scouts questioned his work ethic.  He’s a boom or bust.

DT- Pat Sims- 34 tck  .5 sck

It’s now or never for Sims who enters his 3rd season.

GRADE- 7.5
