I don’t want to jinx anything, but it is looking like it is going to be a two team race for the N.L. West pennant at this time. Hopefully the Pads can gain a little separation from the Giants with the lowly Pirates coming into Petco Park in the upcoming series and the Giants taking on the Cubs up in San Francisco. The Padres have an off day today the 9th of August and the Giants are opening up their series with the before mentioned Cubbie’s. The standings shape up a little strange as of right now with the Giants having played two more games on the season then the Padres. The Padres will make these games up later in the season with the Giants having two more days off then the Pads remaining. Those two games will be significant and lets hope the Padres can use it to their advantage and win those games. After the game this afternoon in San Francisco the Padres will have either a 1.5 or 2.5 game lead on the Giants. Although neither team is coming off a great series, no one else in the division is putting any win streaks together to catch either the Padres or Giants. The Rockies are 6.5 games behind the Pads and the 4th place Dodgers (I love saying that) are 7 games out. I thought that the Rockies would come on strong late in the year and really have a shot at the division but injuries and poor pitching has slowed the talented Colorado club. The Padres and Giants will be beginning an all important series starting on the 13th of August in San Francisco (as big as a series gets in mid August). That will play a big role in the outcome of who takes the pennant in the N.L. West. It will be a playoff like atmosphere and the Padres will hope to continue their strong play against the Giants in 2010.
